Why Is My Discount Code Not Working? 9 Reasons and Fixes

"This code is not valid." "This coupon has expired." "This offer cannot be applied."

Frustrating messages, especially when you are sure you copied the code correctly. The good news: in most cases the problem is not a fault — it is a condition of the coupon that was not met, and knowing it solves the problem in seconds.

Here are the nine reasons, each with a practical fix.

1. An extra space when copying

Start here, because it is the quickest to check. When you select a code by hand with the mouse, or with a long press on your phone, a space before or after the code is often copied too. Many checkout systems do not strip that space, and they reject the code.

The fix: use the dedicated "Copy" button instead of selecting by hand. Or paste the code into a text field first, delete the spaces, then copy it again.

2. The order is below the minimum

Many coupons require a certain order value. For example, a "free delivery on orders over SAR 90" coupon will not work on an order of SAR 85.

The fix: read the coupon's condition before you pay. If you are close to the threshold, add a small item — the value of the discount may exceed its price.

Watch out: the minimum is usually calculated on the value of the products before VAT and delivery, not on the final total.

3. The code is for new customers only

Many of the strongest offers are for the first order. If you already have an account with the store — or even one old order — the code will be rejected.

The fix: check the coupon's description. If it says "new customers", look for another coupon meant for existing customers. And some stores offer codes for both.

Do not create fake accounts to get around the condition — many stores detect it and cancel the order or block the account.

4. The code does not cover discounted products

This one is hidden and annoying. Many codes work on full-price products only, and your basket may contain items that are already on sale.

The fix: remove the discounted items for a moment and apply the code. If it works, that was the reason. Then compare: which saves more — the discount on full-price items, or buying the discounted ones at their sale price?

5. The coupon has expired

Codes have a limited life, and some end within hours. Some coupons also have a limited number of uses and stop once they run out, even before the expiry date.

The fix: use the code as soon as you copy it, and look for a source that shows the expiry date clearly. On our coupon cards we show the end date when it is known, and write "End date unknown" when it is not, instead of implying a deadline we do not know.

6. The code is for another country or section

A coupon valid in the UAE may not work in Saudi Arabia, and a fashion coupon will not work on electronics. Some codes also work only in the app, not on the website.

The fix: make sure the coupon is listed for Saudi Arabia specifically, and that it matches the kind of products you are buying. A coupon shown on our Saudi pages is recorded for Saudi Arabia, and if it works in other countries too, the card says so under "Also in".

7. The discount has a cap

The code works, but the discount is smaller than expected. A common example: "10% off, up to SAR 300" — an order of SAR 5,000 gets only SAR 300 off, not SAR 500.

The fix: this is not a fault but normal behaviour. Check the cap, and if your order is large, splitting it into two orders may save more — work out the difference first, taking delivery fees into account.

8. Cashback does not show as an instant discount

A cashback offer does not reduce the total at checkout. You pay the full amount, and part of it comes back to your wallet once the order is confirmed and the return period has ended.

The fix: if your offer is cashback — as some noon and Almatar codes are — an unchanged total is expected. Check your wallet at the store a few days after you receive the order.

9. You did not press "Apply"

Simple, but common. Pasting the code into the field is not enough — you have to press "Apply", or the same button on the Arabic version of the site, for it to count.

The fix: after pressing it, check that a discount line appears in the order summary. If the total has not changed, the code was not applied.

Quick diagnosis

Follow this order whenever a code is rejected:

If all seven check out, the code has most likely really stopped working — move on to another coupon rather than wasting time.

When to contact customer service

Contact them if:

• the discount appeared in the basket and then disappeared after payment
• a different amount was deducted from the one advertised
• you met every condition and the code was still rejected
• your cashback did not arrive after the stated period

Keep a screenshot of the offer and your order number — it speeds up a resolution considerably.

How to avoid the problem in the first place

1. Use a source that says clearly what it checks. What we check — and what we cannot — is written in how we review coupon information.
2. Read the coupon's condition before you build your basket, not after.
3. Use the code as soon as you copy it — do not put the order off for days.
4. Always check the total before you confirm payment.
5. Keep a backup ready — copy two coupons if there are two.
